After announcing two Lithuanian signings, Deividas Šešplaukis and Klaudijus Upstas, earlier this week, FK Žalgiris Vilnius appears ready to welcome yet another local talent. This time, it is a familiar face: former Žalgiris midfielder Dariuš Stankevičius.
While the move has not been officially confirmed, the club has strongly hinted at the transfer. A video posted on Žalgiris’ social media channels teased a “comeback,” showing their new arrival from behind, unmistakably revealing Stankevičius preparing for a return to the capital.
The 21-year-old midfielder spent his youth career in Vilnius, developing within the FK Žalgiris academy. However, limited opportunities in the first team pushed him to seek game time elsewhere. In 2023, Stankevičius was loaned to FK Sūduva Marijampolė, and a year later he made the move permanent, departing Vilnius to continue his development as a full-time player in Marijampolė.
The 2025 season proved transformative for Stankevičius. Featuring prominently for Sūduva, the fourth-best team in A Lyga this year, he delivered his most impactful campaign to date. Across 35 league games, he contributed 3 goals and 3 assists, establishing himself as a reliable and influential figure in midfield. His performances have elevated his profile and paved the way for a return to the club where his journey began.
Stankevičius now rejoins FK Žalgiris as a more polished and confident player, ready to compete for a significant role in the squad. His return also aligns with the club’s new strategic direction: strengthening its Lithuanian identity and focusing on domestic talent.
In this environment, Stankevičius will have a major opportunity, not only to break into the starting lineup, but also to take an important step forward in his professional career.
