Today in Brussels, the draw for the new UEFA Nations League season will take place, with all three Baltic national teams set to discover their potential opponents. The ceremony begins at 19:00 Baltic time.
This will be the fifth Nations League tournament since its launch in 2018. Two Baltic nations already know their league placement. The Estonia national football team will compete in League C for the fourth time in five editions. Meanwhile, the Lithuania national football team drop to League D for the first time after being relegated from League C in the previous campaign, where they suffered six defeats in six matches against Romania, Kosovo and Cyprus.
The Latvia national football team still do not know which league they will participate in. In late March, Latvia will face Gibraltar national football team in a two-legged play-off to determine if they will stay in the Nations League C or drop down to Nations League D.
A total of 54 UEFA national teams compete in the Nations League. Three leagues consist of 16 teams each, while League D includes six nations.
Estonia, placed in Pot 3 of League C, cannot be drawn against Belarus, the Faroe Islands or Cyprus. Possible opponents from Pot 1 include Iceland, Albania, Montenegro and Kazakhstan. From Pot 2: Finland, Slovakia, Bulgaria or Armenia. From Pot 4: Moldova, San Marino, and the winners of the March play-offs between Latvia vs Gibraltar and Malta vs Luxembourg.
If Latvia overcome Gibraltar, they would share the same potential opponents from Pots 1 and 2 and could also be drawn against teams from Estonia’s Pot 3 group.
Lithuania, now in League D, could face Azerbaijan, Liechtenstein, Andorra, or the losers of the Latvia vs Gibraltar and Malta vs Luxembourg ties. Unlike the higher leagues, League D groups will consist of three teams instead of four.
While not yet officially confirmed, this Nations League cycle is expected to be linked to UEFA Euro 2028 qualification, potentially offering an additional pathway to the tournament.
The group stage will run from September 24 to November 17, with six matchdays scheduled during that period.
