Daniels Balodis made his debut for his new club, St. Johnstone, today, helping them advance to the Scottish Cup quarterfinals after a 1-0 victory over Hamilton.
The 26-year-old center-back, announced as the new St. Johnstone signing last week was not available for selection in the previous St. Johnstone match in which they beat St. Mirren because of an issue with the work permit.
With his work permit finalized, the Latvian national team defender was included in the starting lineup today in the Cup game against the Scottish second-league side Hamilton. Manager Simo Valakari, who previously managed Riga FC and FK Auda, opted for a three-at-the-back formation, placing Balodis on the left side alongside former FK Auda defender Bozo Mikulic, who scored the winning goals in the last two games.
Balodis played the entire match in his debut, contributing to the team’s performance as St. Johnstone secured the winning goal in the 87th minute, scored by Gambian striker Adama Sibideh. This victory allows St. Johnstone to progress to the quarterfinal of the Scottish Cup.
St. Johnstone’s next match is scheduled for next Saturday, where they will face an important away game against Kilmarnock.
