Latvian Virslīga club FS Jelgava has officially signed 24-year-old defender Roberts Veips for the 2025 season.
Born in Riga, Veips began playing football at just five years old. His parents later enrolled him in the prestigious Skonto Football Academy, where he built a strong foundation as a player. At 16, he moved to Italy to join the youth system of Genoa’s Sampdoria. In 2021, he transitioned to GSD Ambrosiana, competing in Italy’s Serie D.
September 2021 marked his return to Latvia, where he joined Nākotnes Līga side Auda. That same season, he helped the team secure the league title. His decision to come back from Italy was partly influenced by FS Jelgava’s current head coach, Aleksandrs Basovs, who had previously invited Veips to the Latvian youth national team, ultimately leading to the defender’s choice to stay in his home country. In 2022, Veips signed with Virslīga club Valmiera FC, where he played a role in winning the Latvian championship.
The previous Virslīga season started with a setback for Roberts Veips, as he was sidelined due to an injury. However, he made his return in the 23rd round and went on to play a total of eight matches in the league, gradually regaining his form on the field.
Throughout his career, Roberts Veips has been a consistent presence in Latvia’s youth national teams, gaining valuable international experience. He represented his country at various levels, making five appearances for the U-17 squad, four for the U-18 team, and an impressive 22 matches with the U-19 side. His development continued with the U-21 national team, where he earned 17 caps and even scored a goal.
