FK Liepāja midfielder Andriy Korobenko recently shared his thoughts with the club’s official website about his first few weeks at the club, the winter training camp in Turkey, and his expectations for the upcoming season. The Ukrainian, who joined FK Liepāja in January, is eager to continue developing with the team and contribute to their success.
When asked about his move to FK Liepāja, Korobenko reflected on how quickly the opportunity came about: “It all happened very fast. I didn’t expect it, but I’m happy to be here. I was training at Shakhtar Donetsk, and suddenly I got the offer to come to Latvia. It was a great chance, and I took it.”
Korobenko described the team’s time in Turkey as productive, focusing on both physical and tactical preparation: “We had great training sessions. The conditions were perfect, and we were able to work hard. The camp was focused on improving our fitness, but also on how we play together as a team. I’ve already started to understand the defensive players well. They’re intelligent on the ball and know when to pass it forward. It’s easier for me to link up the defense with the attack.”
Reflecting on the Latvian championship, Korobenko gave his perspective on the competition: “I think the league is developing. There are clear top teams who fight for European spots, and the lower teams are fighting to stay up. It’s a competitive league. Many Ukrainian players think the Latvian league is not very strong, but I think they’re wrong. RFS’ good performance in the Europa League shows that the league is getting better. It’s not easy here – there’s a lot of physicality and speed, and that makes it interesting.”
As a midfielder, Korobenko plays a key role in linking defense and attack. “I’m a link between defense and attack. My goal is to move the ball quickly and create chances for my teammates, at Shakhtar Donetsk, we were always taught to look for the forward pass. I always try to bring the ball forward and make attacking passes. I like the way we play here. We focus on quick transitions and attacking football. The style suits me, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
Korobenko is feeling positive about the season ahead: “I’m about 70% ready now, but I know I’ll be in better shape when the season starts. I’m working hard to improve every day.”
Finally, Korobenko expressed his enthusiasm for the season ahead: “The team is doing well, and we’ve been working hard. We’re all focused on improving and doing our best this year. I’m excited to see what we can achieve.”
