A Lyga champions FK Žalgiris have announced the signing of former FK Auda left-back Bruno Tavares to strengthen their squad.
The 22-year-old Portuguese player spent last season with FK Auda in the Latvian Virslīga, where he helped the team secure a third-place finish in the league, reach the Latvian Cup final, and advance to the third round in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
During the previous season, Bruno made 30 appearances in the Virslīga, contributing with five assists. He also played six matches in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers, scoring one spectacular goal from a free kick, which was the game-winner against the Kosovo side FC Drita in the 1st leg game at Skonto Stadium.
Tavares, a graduate of the Sporting youth academy, previously played for the Portuguese team Varzim and spent two seasons with Pafos in Cyprus.
FK Žalgiris hopes that Tavares will replicate the success of the last former Latvian Virslīga left-back who played for them. He is set to fill the role left by former Riga FC player Joel Bopesu. Bopesu enjoyed a successful four-season stint with Žalgiris, winning the A Lyga title three times. After a remarkable season in which he scored seven goals and provided 14 assists in the league, including earning a place in the end-of-season Team of the Year, the 30-year-old Bopesu made a move to Armenia, joining Pyunik Yerevan.
