Riga FC ended their two-match winless run in dramatic fashion on Monday evening, scoring in stoppage time to secure a 1-0 away victory over Super Nova in their rescheduled Virslīga Matchday 24 fixture.
Super Nova competed well from the opening minutes and prevented the defending champions from taking complete control. Riga registered seven attempts in the first half but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, with Dāvis Veisbuks dealing with their most dangerous efforts as the teams went into the break goalless.
Riga increased the pressure after half-time, although Meissa Diop sent an early effort over the crossbar. Super Nova also threatened at the other end, with Jegors Cīrulis later forcing Frenks Orols into a save, but the visitors gradually began to dominate as the match entered its closing stages.
Head coach Adrian Gul’a made four changes at once in the 62nd minute, introducing Mohamed Badamosi, Caio Ferreira, Abdulrahman Taiwo and Iago Siqueira. The changes helped Riga increase the intensity, with Siqueira forcing Veisbuks into a save before Orlando Galo had several opportunities to break the deadlock.
Riga appeared destined to drop points for a third consecutive match as the game entered stoppage time, but Badamosi finally found the breakthrough in the 91st minute. Raivis Jurkovskis, who had entered the game only nine minutes earlier, delivered an excellent cross from the right and the Gambian striker powered his header into the bottom corner to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory.
The win keeps Riga’s hopes of retaining the Virslīga title alive, reducing the gap to leaders RFS to three points. RFS, however, have played one game fewer and can restore their six-point advantage with a victory.
For Super Nova, the late defeat brought their four-match unbeaten run to an end. They remain sixth in the standings, seven points behind fourth place.
