Grobiņa earned an important point in their battle to avoid the Virslīga relegation play-off after playing out a 0-0 draw against Jelgava, with goalkeeper Roberts Ozols producing a crucial penalty save in the second half.
Jelgava created more of the opportunities during the opening half in Liepāja. Roberts Meļķis forced an early save from Ozols, while Martin Hašek and Miloš Pudil both went close. Grobiņa had chances of their own, with Milan Corryn firing over before Ivan Tyshchenko headed narrowly wide following a counter-attack.
Both goalkeepers were called into action shortly before the interval. Ozols denied Filip Hašek from the centre of the penalty area in the 41st minute, before Anton Baydal tested Adam Dvorak at the opposite end moments later as the teams went into half-time without a goal.
Jelgava continued to look dangerous after the break and were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 66th minute when Jose Ribeiro fouled Meļķis inside the penalty area. Meļķis stepped up himself, but Ozols guessed correctly and saved the penalty before reacting quickly to deny the Jelgava player again from the rebound.
The visitors continued pushing for the breakthrough and came within centimetres in the 80th minute. Maksims Semeško delivered into the penalty area and Gļebs Žaleiko met the cross with a header, only to see the ball crash against the crossbar.
Grobiņa also had opportunities to steal all three points. Artjoms Puzirevskis twice headed over, while substitute Ali Aruna found himself in an excellent position in front of goal in stoppage time but could only produce a weak effort that Dvorak comfortably saved.
Jelgava then struck the woodwork for a second time in the fourth minute of added time. Semeško first saw an effort blocked before meeting Jegors Novikovs’ delivery with a header that hit the crossbar, leaving the visitors frustrated as the final whistle confirmed a goalless draw.
The point moves Grobiņa two points clear of ninth-placed Tukums 2000 in the fight to avoid the relegation play-off. Their next Virslīga match will be a direct meeting with Tukums on September 20, a potentially crucial game in the battle for eighth place.
