Žalgiris Vilnius have announced the signing of Lithuanian goalkeeper Marius Adamonis, with the 29-year-old returning to his homeland after leaving Italian Serie B side Südtirol earlier this summer.
Adamonis has signed a two-year contract with Žalgiris, with an option to extend it for another year. However, the goalkeeper will only be officially registered with the Vilnius club at the beginning of 2027, when the next player registration period opens.
The Panevėžys-born goalkeeper spent the last year and a half with Südtirol, joining the club in January 2025 after initially moving there on loan from Serie C side Catania. During his time in Bolzano, Adamonis made 52 appearances, keeping 14 clean sheets, including 10 in 36 Serie B appearances last season.
Adamonis has spent almost a decade in Italian football. He began his senior career with Lithuanian side Atlantas before moving to Italy in 2016, when he joined Serie A giants Lazio.
The goalkeeper was initially loaned to English Premier League side Bournemouth in early 2016 before completing his move to Lazio that summer. Although he never made a first-team appearance for the Rome club, he remained contracted to Lazio until 2024 and spent much of that time on loan.
During his years in Italy, Adamonis represented Salernitana, Casertana, Catanzaro, Sicula Leonzio and Perugia, while also being registered as a backup goalkeeper in Lazio’s Serie A squad.
He made his Serie B debut in 2017 with Salernitana, while the 2023–24 campaign proved to be one of his most productive seasons. As Perugia’s first-choice goalkeeper, he made 36 appearances in Serie C.
In the summer of 2024, Adamonis joined Catania before moving to northern Italy six months later to sign for Südtirol.
“Lithuanian players will always be our priority. We are delighted to have been able to take advantage of the opportunity to bring in a goalkeeper with solid experience at foreign clubs who is also being called up to the Lithuanian national team,” said Žalgiris sporting director Giedrius Klevinskas.
Adamonis began his football journey at a football academy in his hometown of Panevėžys before joining Atlantas in 2015. He has represented Lithuania at various youth levels and made his senior international debut in November 2022.
