The Saturday’s Virslīga Matchday 28 triple-header ended with a dramatic 1-1 draw between Auda and Super Nova, as the visitors survived a red card and heavy second-half pressure to leave with a point.
Super Nova almost struck inside the opening minute after winning the ball and launching a sharp counter-attack. Ivans Patrikejevs quickly found himself inside the Auda penalty area one-on-one against Raivo Stūriņš, but he could not get his shot away before an Auda defender recovered and cleared the danger.
Auda soon took control and opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Oskars Rubenis found Andrew Appiah inside the penalty area, and the 18-year-old showed excellent composure, creating space for himself before firing into the near top corner. It was his second goal for the Auda.
The match appeared to swing further in Auda’s favour before half-time. In the 38th minute, Appiah again drove dangerously towards goal and was stopped by Ibrahima Ndiaye with a foul. The Super Nova defender had already been booked, and his second yellow card left the visitors with ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Super Nova refused to collapse. Auda threatened early in the second half, with Jayden Gerold forcing Dāvis Veisbuks into a save from distance after a corner routine, but the visitors stayed alive.
Then, in the 59th minute, Super Nova stunned the hosts. Bamba blocked an attempted clearance, won the ball and drove forward on a dangerous counter-attack. The Senegalese forward beat the Auda defence before playing the ball across goal, leaving Valerijs Lizunovs with a simple finish into the empty corner to make it 1-1.
Auda pushed strongly in the closing stages, completely dominating possession and pinning Super Nova deep inside their own half. The hosts finished the second half with 22 shots, eight of them on target, and six corners, but Veisbuks stood firm and kept out everything that came his way.
In the end, Super Nova held on for an impressive point despite playing more than half the match with ten men, while Auda were left frustrated after failing to turn their dominance into a winning goal.
Super Nova will return to action on September 5 with another away match, this time against FS Jelgava, where they will have a chance to climb into sixth place. Auda, meanwhile, turn their attention to the Latvian Cup on Tuesday, when they continue the defence of their title in the semi-final against BFC Daugavpils.
