FK Liepāja have announced another coaching change, afrer mutual agreement parting ways with Estonian specialist Vladimir Vassiljev just three months after his appointment. The decision comes two days after Liepāja’s defeat to FK Auda in the Virslīga.
The 38-year-old took charge at the end of May following the departure of Swedish coach Andreas Alm, who had spent less than a year in charge of the club. However, results did not significantly improve under Vassiljev, with Liepāja playing 16 matches during his spell, winning seven and losing nine.
During his time in charge, Liepāja progressed through one round in the UEFA Conference League before eventually being eliminated by Rapid Wien. The club were also knocked out of the Latvian Cup in July, losing to FK Auda.
Vassiljev joined Liepāja after leaving Estonian side Paide Linnameeskond earlier this year, where he had been dismissed in April.
FK Liepāja currently sit fifth in the Virslīga table and remain locked in a battle with BFC Daugavpils for the final European qualification spot. With nine rounds remaining, both clubs are level on points, but Daugavpils are above Liepāja due to their head-to-head advantage.
Liepāja’s next match is scheduled for 31 August, when they host reigning Latvian champions Riga FC.
