Paide Linnameeskond’s UEFA Conference League campaign came to an end on Wednesday evening after suffering a 0-2 defeat away to Austrian side Rapid Wien, who progressed to the play-off round with a commanding 6-1 aggregate victory.
Facing a daunting three-goal deficit following last week’s 1-4 home defeat, Paide travelled to Vienna needing something extraordinary to overturn the tie. While Tarmo Kink’s side once again showed resilience for long periods, Rapid’s quality ultimately proved too much.
The Estonian club made two changes to the starting line-up from the first leg, with Henri Anier replacing Abdourahman Badamosi in attack, while Hindrek Ojamaa came into the side at right-back instead of Edgar Tur.
Paide made an encouraging start and looked comfortable during the opening stages despite playing in front of nearly 13,000 spectators at Allianz Stadion. Martin Miller had an early effort blocked, while the visitors defended confidently and restricted Rapid to speculative efforts from distance.
As the first half progressed, however, the Austrian side gradually took control of possession and began creating more dangerous situations. Ebrima Jarju was called into action on several occasions, while Daniel Luts made an important defensive intervention to deny Rapid inside the penalty area.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 40th minute. Tilio finished from close range after a cross from the right, with the assistant referee initially ruling the goal out for offside. Following a VAR review, the decision was overturned and the goal stood, giving Rapid a 1-0 lead on the night and extending their aggregate advantage to 5-1.
Paide entered the second half knowing they needed four goals to force extra time, but the match largely followed the same pattern. Rapid dominated possession without creating a flood of clear-cut opportunities, while the Estonian side struggled to generate sustained attacking pressure.
Their best opportunity arrived midway through the second half when Henri Anier won possession high up the pitch and fired a low shot from the edge of the penalty area, but Rapid goalkeeper Niklas Hedl reacted well to deny the experienced striker with his legs.
The contest was effectively put beyond doubt in the 84th minute following another VAR intervention. After initially awarding Rapid a free-kick on the edge of the box, the referee reviewed the incident and instead pointed to the penalty spot, ruling that a foul had been committed inside the area. Louis Schaub converted from the spot despite Jarju diving the correct way, doubling Rapid’s lead.
Both Anier and head coach Tarmo Kink were booked for protesting the decision, but there would be no late response from the Estonian visitors as Rapid comfortably saw out the remaining minutes.
Although the result brought Paide’s European adventure to an end, the club can once again look back on another successful continental campaign, reaching the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round for the third time in their history.
