Paide Linnameeskond’s hopes of causing another major European upset were dealt a heavy blow on Thursday evening as the Estonian side collapsed late on to suffer a 1-4 defeat against Austrian giants Rapid Vienna in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round tie.
The dream of another memorable European night quickly turned into a nightmare. Barely four minutes had been played when Rapid were awarded a penalty following a VAR review after Victor Hugo was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area. Hungarian international Bendeguz Bolla calmly converted from the spot to give the visitors an early advantage.
Despite the disastrous start, Paide gradually settled into the contest. Rapid enjoyed most of the possession but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, while the hosts looked increasingly dangerous on the counter. Cabral came closest with a long-range effort that drifted narrowly wide before Paide began to grow in confidence.
Their persistence was rewarded four minutes before half-time. Following a corner, the ball was recycled back into the penalty area where Abdourahman Badamosi headed against the crossbar. The rebound fell kindly for Daniel Luts, who reacted quickest to fire home from close range and send the home crowd into celebration.
The equaliser transformed the atmosphere inside A. Le Coq Arena and Paide almost completed the turnaround before the break, only for Badamosi to be denied after another promising attack.
The Estonian side carried that momentum into the second half and arguably looked the more threatening team during the opening stages after the restart. Henri Anier’s introduction added fresh energy in attack, while Daniel Luts squandered a golden opportunity after breaking into the penalty area, opting for an extra pass instead of shooting.
Rapid, however, gradually regained control as their deeper squad began to make the difference. A triple substitution injected fresh legs into the Austrian side, and with just under ten minutes remaining they reclaimed the lead through Moulaye Haidara after goalkeeper Ebrima Jarju could only partially clear a dangerous attack.
The visitors then ruthlessly punished a tiring Paide side. Only moments later Furkan Demir delivered a low cross that was turned home by Petter Dahl to make it 3-1, before Haidara struck again in stoppage time to complete a convincing 4-1 victory.
For much of the evening Paide matched one of Austria’s biggest clubs, but the closing stages highlighted the difference in depth and experience. The Estonian side now face a monumental task in next week’s second leg in Vienna if they are to keep their European campaign alive.
