TransINVEST climbed to the top of the Toplyga table on Sunday after securing a 2-1 away victory over FC Hegelmann in Round 25.
The visitors started brightly and created the first dangerous chance of the match when Mykola Musolitin delivered a cross into the penalty area for Iker Bilbao, whose powerful effort was well saved by Lukas Paukšte.
Hegelmann responded almost immediately. Vedad Radonja broke through down the flank after a long pass and forced Igor Mostovyi into a save, before Donatas Kazlauskas saw his follow-up effort brilliantly blocked by a recovering TransINVEST defender.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute. Musolitin’s dangerous set-piece caused problems inside the box, and Hegelmann defender Barry Isaac inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to hand the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The match opened up further after the break. Hegelmann threatened through Vilius Armanavičius, whose long-range strike was comfortably dealt with by Mostovyi, but it was TransINVEST who doubled their advantage. Once again Musolitin was the provider, delivering another excellent cross that Xabi Auzmendi headed home to make it 2-0.
The visitors had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, but Dominykas Barauskas failed to convert a good chance before Hegelmann pulled one back in the 72nd minute. Following a set-piece, Domas Slendzoka powered a header into the corner to reduce the deficit.
Hegelmann threw everything forward in the closing stages, with goalkeeper Lukas Paukšte even joining the attack for late corner kicks, but TransINVEST stood firm to see out the victory.
The result sends TransINVEST to the top of the Toplyga standings, at least temporarily. Džiugas Telšiai can reclaim first place on Monday with a victory over FK Panevėžys.
