Lithuanian champions Kauno Žalgiris made history on Wednesday evening by defeating Faroese champions KI Klaksvik 1-0 at Jonava Stadium to book their place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
The victory also guarantees Kauno Žalgiris at least a place in the UEFA Conference League league phase, making them only the second Lithuanian club, after FK Žalgiris Vilnius, to secure European league phase football.
After last week’s goalless draw in the Faroe Islands, the second leg proved to be another tightly contested affair. The opening stages were evenly matched, with neither side creating many clear-cut opportunities. Kauno Žalgiris enjoyed more possession, but KI Klaksvik gradually grew into the match and threatened on several occasions, while the Lithuanian champions struggled to turn promising attacks into quality chances.
The pattern remained largely unchanged after the break. Kauno Žalgiris pushed for the breakthrough, but their finishing continued to let them down as the Faroese champions defended resolutely and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.
The decisive moment finally arrived in the 85th minute. Substitute Leon Krekovic latched onto a pass from the left flank inside the penalty area and calmly finished with his left foot to send the home supporters into celebration.
The late winner secured a historic victory for Kauno Žalgiris, who continue their remarkable European campaign and become only the second Lithuanian club to guarantee football in one of UEFA’s league phases.
Kauno Žalgiris will now face Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, with a place in the competition’s play-offs at stake.
