Estonian internationals Märten Kuusk and Kevor Palumets both began new chapters in their careers on Sunday, starting for their new clubs as the Polish and Slovak league seasons got underway for them.
After spending the previous three seasons with Ekstraklasa side GKS Katowice, 30-year-old centre-back Kuusk completed a summer move to Polish second-tier club Polonia Warszawa. The defender was immediately named in the starting lineup for his competitive debut as Polonia opened the campaign away to Puszcza.
The visitors secured all three points thanks to a late winner from Finnish player Simon Skrabb, whose strike in the 84th minute proved enough for a 1-0 victory. Kuusk played the full 90 minutes in his first official appearance for the Warsaw club and was also shown a yellow card. Polonia will return to action next Saturday when they host Skierniewice.
Meanwhile, the Slovak season began in spectacular fashion for Palumets and Košice, who were involved in an entertaining 4-4 draw away to Žilina in a match that featured four lead changes.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who spent the previous two seasons with fellow Slovak side Podbrezova, made his official debut for Košice after joining the club this summer and was included in the starting eleven.
The opening half produced three goals, while the second period delivered five more in a remarkable contest. Žilina took the lead for the third time in the 78th minute, but Košice responded seven minutes later through Aleksa Maras, who scored his second goal of the afternoon to rescue a 4-4 draw.
Palumets played 84 minutes before being substituted just a minute before Košice found their late equaliser.
Košice are back in action next Saturday when they host Trenčin, the club represented by Estonian trio Markus Poom, Dimitri Jepihhin and Kristo Hussar.
