Estonia international Markus Poom marked the start of the new Slovak First League season with a spectacular goal as AS Trenčin were held to a 1-1 draw by Komarno. Elsewhere, Estonian players were also in action in the Slovak second tier, Sweden’s Allsvenskan and Norway’s Eliteserien.
The Slovak top-flight campaign kicked off on Saturday, with both Markus Poom and Dmitri Jepihhin named in Trenčin’s starting line-up against Komárno, while compatriot Kristo Hussar was not in the matchday squad.
Trenčin took the lead in the 14th minute thanks to a brilliant strike from Poom. After sustained pressure forced the visitors to clear the ball only as far as the edge of the penalty area, the Estonian midfielder controlled it before unleashing a powerful first-time volley into the back of the net from outside the box.
However, the hosts were unable to hold on to their advantage, with Komarno finding an equaliser in the 66th minute as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Poom played the full 90 minutes and scored his first goal in the Slovak top flight. Last season, the 26-year-old registered four assists in 13 league appearances for Trenčin. Jepihhin also started the match and played 61 minutes.
Trenčin will next travel to face fellow Estonian Kevor Palumets and his Košice side next Saturday. Košice begin their league campaign on Sunday with an away fixture against Žilina.
In Sweden’s Allsvenskan, goalkeeper Matvei Igonen produced another impressive individual performance despite Degerfors suffering a narrow 0-1 home defeat to Djurgardens. The Estonian international made six saves, with the only goal arriving in the 43rd minute when Bo Hegland was left unmarked in front of goal.
The defeat extended Degerfors’ winless run to ten league matches, with their last victory coming on 23 April. The club sits 14th in the 16-team standings with 10 points from 14 matches ahead of next Sunday’s away game against IFK Goteborg.
In Norway’s Eliteserien, Markus Soomets remained an unused substitute as IK Start claimed an important 2-1 away victory over Kristiansund. The 26-year-old midfielder has made 11 league appearances this season. Despite the win, Start remain bottom of the table with 10 points from 15 matches, although they are only five points behind 10th-placed Rosenborg.
The new Slovak second-tier season also began on Saturday. Aleksandr Lohkmatov started his second campaign with Pohronie by coming off the bench in the 57th minute as his side played out an entertaining 3-3 draw against Lehota in their opening fixture.
