Lithuanian champions Kauno Žalgiris earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw away to Faroese side KÍ Klaksvík in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie, leaving everything to play for in next week’s return leg in Jonava.
The result means Željko Sopic’s side remain firmly in contention for a place in the third qualifying round, which would also guarantee at least a UEFA Conference League league phase berth should they ultimately fail to reach the Champions League proper.
The hosts made the brighter start, forcing goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas into two early saves inside the opening three minutes. The Lithuanian champions gradually settled into the contest and enjoyed more possession midway through the first half, although they struggled to create any meaningful opportunities against KI’s well-organised defence.
Klaksvik continued to pose the greater attacking threat, with Švedkauskas again called into action in the 13th minute before the Faroese side threatened from a dangerous corner shortly before half-time. Neither side, however, managed to break the deadlock before the interval.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with KI enjoying the clearer chances. Švedkauskas produced another outstanding save six minutes after the restart, tipping a dangerous effort over the crossbar to keep the scores level.
Kauno Žalgiris found it difficult to establish themselves in attack after the break and failed to register a shot for almost an hour, while KI continued to apply pressure through a series of dangerous attacks and set-pieces.
The visitors eventually began to threaten in the closing stages. A rare attacking move earned Kauno Žalgiris a corner in the 78th minute, although they were unable to test the goalkeeper, before substitute Vykintas Slivka came closest to breaking the deadlock two minutes from time when his effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Neither side could find a breakthrough during three minutes of added time, ensuring the tie remains finely balanced ahead of next weeks second leg in Jonava, where Kauno Žalgiris will look to secure a place in the third qualifying round.
