RFS returned to the top of the Tonybet Virslīga after Mamadou Sylla – recently recalled from loan at BFC Daugavpils – scored his first goal for the club in a 1-0 away win against FS Jelgava.
The 20-year-old Ivorian, recalled from BFC Daugavpils, struck in the 39th minute after Lasha Odisharia broke down the left and delivered into the penalty area. Jelgava’s defenders set themselves for a familiar aerial threat from Darko Lemajič, but Sylla found space and finished from close range.
RFS had set the tempo early and could have gone ahead already in the eighth minute when Sylla met a delivery with a header that forced goalkeeper Adam Dvorak into a save. Jelgava’s first clear opening arrived on 17th minute as Filip Hasek miscued control in front of goal but still managed a falling effort that Rihards Matrevics gathered.
Jelgava threatened either side of half-time. In the 43rd minute, Gļebs Žaleiko’s long-range strike was pushed away by Matrevics before the ball hit the crossbar, while defender Jegors Novikovs dragged a shot wide early in the second half from a promising position.
With no further goals, RFS protected their lead to complete a clean sheet and move one point above Riga FC after 23 rounds. For Jelgava, it was a fourth straight defeat against RFS, and a fourth successive match without scoring against the Riga side.
