After four years at the helm, Aleksandrs Basovs has announced that he will no longer continue as head coach of Latvia’s U21 national football team. Starting December 1, 2024, the team will welcome a new leader, as Basovs transitions to free agency.
In a heartfelt statement, Basovs thanked his staff, players, clubs, and fans for their support, calling the cycle “excellent work.” Over nine years with the Latvian Football Federation, Basovs also coached U17, U18, and U19 squads and worked in youth development at multiple clubs.
Under his leadership, the team achieved significant milestones, including two Baltic Cup victories (2022 and 2024) and an 11-point Euro U21 qualifying campaign – the best result in 14 years. Additionally, five players progressed to the senior national team during this cycle, with 16 players earning call-ups during his time in charge.
