Kauno Žalgiris warmed up for their trip to Kosovo with a 3-0 Toplyga win over Panevėžys at Darius and Girėnas Stadium, a result that lifted Željko Sopič’s side back to the top of the table for the time being.
The hosts struck early, with Marko Konatar delivering a cross into the area for Renan Oliveira to head home in the seventh minute. Oliveira then came close to doubling his tally on 20th minute, after getting to the ball in front of Vytautas Černiauskas, but his effort drifted wide of the post.
Kauno Žalgiris did make it 2-0 soon after when Motiejus Burba won a duel in the box and laid the ball back for their star player Amine Benchaib, who swept a low finish past the goalkeeper.
The home side continued to control the game after the break and Benchaib added his second on 57 minutes, converting from the spot after Fabien Ourega was fouled to win the penalty.
Panevėžys forced goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas into his first save of the match only on 70th minute, while Burba later tested Černiauskas with a low shot. Panevėžys also had a chance in added time but were unable to find a consolation.
Kauno Žalgiris fly to Kosovo on Monday for their UEFA Champions League qualifier, and return to domestic action on 18th July with a home fixture against FA Šiauliai.
