FK Kauno Žalgiris marked their historic UEFA Champions League debut with a 1-1 draw against Kosovan champions Drita, surrendering a first-half lead at Darius and Girėnas Stadium ahead of next week’s decisive second leg in Kosovo.
Manager Željko Sopic made two changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Džiugas Telšiai in the Toplyga, handing summer signing Marko Konatar his first start, while experienced Brazilian winger Leo Ribeiro also returned to the starting lineup.
The Lithuanian champions made a flying start in front of their home supporters. Inside the opening 90 seconds they had already earned three corners, while left-back Joris Moutachy also picked up an early yellow card following a robust challenge.
After the frantic opening exchanges, the game settled into a more controlled rhythm, with Kauno Žalgiris enjoying most of the possession without creating any clear-cut opportunities until the 24th minute. Their fourth corner of the evening finally brought the breakthrough. Rokas Lekiatas flicked the delivery on with a clever header and the ball dropped perfectly for Amine Benchaib, who struck a superb first-time volley into the roof of the net. The goal not only gave the hosts a deserved lead but also became the first-ever UEFA Champions League goal in FK Kauno Žalgiris’ history.
Drita gradually responded after falling behind and began to see more of the ball, but despite enjoying longer spells of possession, the Kosovan champions struggled to create meaningful chances before the break. Kauno Žalgiris comfortably protected their advantage and went into half-time looking the more dangerous side.
The second half, however, developed very differently. Drita enjoyed significantly more possession, while Kauno Žalgiris focused on protecting their narrow lead and looked increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack rather than through sustained spells with the ball.
Despite controlling possession, the visitors found it difficult to break down the Lithuanian defence. In fact, it was Kauno Žalgiris who came closest to scoring again, with Drita goalkeeper Faton Maloku denying Gratas Sirgedas from the edge of the area after the midfielder had substituted Fabien Ourega.
The visitors’ pressure finally paid off eight minutes from time. Raddy Ovouka delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area and Blerim Krasniqi rose highest to guide a header beyond Tomas Švedkauskas, silencing the home crowd and levelling the tie at 1-1.
Kauno Žalgiris nearly snatched victory in stoppage time. After sustained pressure around the Drita penalty area, Anton Tolordava met a cross with a powerful header destined for the top corner, only for Maloku to produce a spectacular save and preserve the draw.
The result leaves everything to play for ahead of next week’s return leg in Kosovo, with the winner progressing to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
