FC Flora begin their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign on Wednesday evening when the Estonian champions host Georgian title holders Iberia Tbilisi in the first qualifying round at A. Le Coq Arena.
Although preparations intensified after Flora’s most recent Premium Liiga match against Kuressaare, head coach Konstantin Vassiljev revealed that work on analysing their European opponents had started much earlier to avoid overwhelming his players with information in the final days before the tie.
“The main difference is that you need to give the players much more information about the opponent because we don’t play against them four or five times a year,” Vassiljev said in a pre-match press conference. “We started collecting information while the league season was still ongoing so that we wouldn’t have to cram everything into five days. By the time we started presenting everything to the players, we already had a clear understanding of what to expect.”
The 40-year-old joked that his preparation had not led to many sleepless nights, with one notable exception. “We managed to divide the preparation process quite well, so there weren’t really any sleepless nights. Only because of the World Cup matches,” he laughed.
Flora face an Iberia side that has changed considerably since the Georgian champions last visited Tallinn in European competition a year ago. The club appointed new head coach Andri Demchenko just over a month ago, while several key players have also changed, making analysis slightly more challenging.
“They have a new coach and several new players, which naturally makes preparation a little more difficult,” Vassiljev explained. “Fortunately, there are still some friendly matches and recent games to analyse. I wouldn’t say we’ve seen anything particularly surprising.”
Despite acknowledging the quality of the opposition, Vassiljev believes the key battle will be decided in central areas before ultimately being settled inside both penalty boxes.
“I think most teams do similar things. The difference comes from the quality of the players, the intensity of the league and the amount of time and space you’re given. We need to adapt to that quickly. They are definitely a very high-quality opponent.”
“Whoever controls midfield usually controls the game, but in the end matches are decided inside the penalty areas. We have to be fully focused in both phases – making the most of our chances when we have the ball and doing everything possible to stop them inside our own box.”
Asked whether either side should be considered favourites, the Flora coach remained cautious. “It’s difficult to say. The opponent certainly has strong qualities. Whether that makes them favourites, I’m not sure. But I definitely wouldn’t say that we are favourites. Every match starts at 0-0 and we will have our opportunities.”
Vassiljev also reflected on last season’s disappointing European exit against Icelandic side Valur, but insisted he feels anticipation rather than pressure heading into another Champions League campaign.
“Every team prepares extremely seriously for European matches because everyone understands what is at stake. Especially in the Champions League, where getting through the first round guarantees additional matches.”
“It’s not pressure. I simply want us to realise our potential. If we do that and the opponent is still better, then there’s nothing you can do.”
“European matches are always something you look forward to. It’s another challenge. You can analyse videos and prepare as much as possible, but the opponent can still surprise you with something. We simply have to be ready for everything.”
Flora have received a boost ahead of the match, with Airon Kollo returning to full fitness after missing the league victory over Kuressaare. Vassiljev also suggested supporters should not expect any major surprises in his starting lineup.
The first leg between Flora and Iberia kicks off at 19:00 local time on Wednesday at A. Le Coq Arena.
