Estonian champions Flora Tallinn warmed up for their upcoming UEFA Champions League first qualifying round ties against Georgian champions Iberia 1999 with a comfortable 3-0 away victory over FC Kuressaare in Premium Liiga Round 18, cutting the gap to league leaders Levadia to seven points.
The opening stages offered little goalmouth action as both teams struggled to create clear opportunities. Kuressaare produced the first effort on target through Andero Kivi’s header, comfortably gathered by Flora goalkeeper Evert Grünvald.
Flora thought they had taken the lead after 15 minutes when Tony Varjund found the net following Danil Kuraksin’s lofted pass. However, after a brief delay, the goal was ruled out for offside as Taaniel Usta was adjudged to have been involved in the build-up.
The visitors did eventually break the deadlock in the 29th minute. Following a corner, centre-back Mihhail Kolobov struck a low effort from outside the penalty area which took a decisive deflection off Johann Vahermägi, wrong-footing goalkeeper Karl-Romet Nõmm and finding the back of the net.
Flora dominated possession throughout the remainder of the first half but created few clear-cut chances, taking a narrow 1-0 advantage into the break.
The defending champions doubled their lead eight minutes after the restart through a moment of individual brilliance from Varjund. The midfielder dribbled past four Kuressaare defenders, nutmegging the final two before calmly slotting the ball beyond Nõmm to make it 2-0.
Just seven minutes later, Flora effectively sealed the victory. Sergei Zenjov burst down the right flank and forced a save from Nõmm, but Taaniel Usta reacted quickest to head the rebound into the net after the ball deflected off defender Rico Piil.
With a comfortable three-goal cushion, Flora head coach Konstantin Vassiljev began rotating his squad ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier, introducing several substitutes and handing 17-year-old Ronald Sammul his Premium Liiga debut late in the match.
Kuressaare produced their best opportunities in the final 20 minutes through Evgeni Demidov and Deivid Andreas, but Grünvald remained alert to preserve a clean sheet. Flora also came close to adding a fourth late on, although Sander Alamaa fired over from close range.
The victory strengthens Flora’s grip on second place in the Premium Liiga standings with 36 points, while leaders Levadia remain seven points ahead on 43, having played one match fewer. Kuressaare stay ninth in the table.
Flora’s next league fixture will not take place until 17 July, with two UEFA Champions League qualifying matches against Georgian champions Iberia 1999 scheduled in between. Kuressaare return to league action on 11 July with an away trip to Nõmme United.
