One of the key figures behind FK Džiugas Telšiai’s surprise Toplyga title challenge, Gaston Manuel Romano, has completed a move to Maltese champions Floriana FC, who will begin their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign next week.

The Maltese club confirmed the signing of the 28-year-old midfielder, who spent the last 12 months with Džiugas. Romano featured in all 18 Toplyga matches this season, starting 15 of them, and played a vital role in the club’s impressive campaign. Džiugas recently surrendered first place in the standings after being caught by Sūduva, with both teams now level on 29 points after 18 matches.

Romano joined Džiugas midway through last season after leaving Romanian side FC Botoșani and quickly established himself as one of the team’s most influential players. Over the course of his year in Telšiai, the Argentine made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal while becoming a key part of the club’s midfield.

The move now takes him to 27-time Maltese champions Floriana, who reclaimed the league title last season for the first time since the 2019/20 campaign.

Floriana will begin their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign against Irish champions Shelbourne FC in the first qualifying round next week.
