Lithuanian women’s national team finished last in the Women’s Baltic Cup, losing 1-2 to Faroe Islands in the bronze medal game.
After narrowly losing to current title holders Estonia in a penalty shoot-out on Thursday, Lithuanian women failed to improve their fortunes on Sunday against Faroe Islands, ultimately losing 1-2 to the guest nation.
The match for the third place began well for Lithuania, who enjoyed initiative and some advantage in possession. Over the course of the first half, Faroe Islands recovered and opened the score from a free kick in the 18th minute. Lithuania equalised 6 minutes later as Liucija Vaitukaitytė scored a header, but Faroe Islands regained the lead just before the half-time whistle, in the 44th minute. No goals followed in the second half, and so the game ended 1-2, leaving Lithuania to finish last.
Reflection on their performance, the national team captain Milda Liužinaitė expressed disappointment:
The result is not satisfactory because we had higher goals in mind. It couldn’t be any different, because these are the teams that we can win against. Of course, the opponents are also preparing, football is growing in their countries, so we did not expect it to be an easy match.
This was the worst finish for Lithuania since 2018, when they also finished last in a 3-team format competition. In the previous two editions of the competition, Lithuania finished third in 2022 and first in 2021.
