The TOPLYGA standings have become increasingly congested, with teams drawing closer together as the season enters a decisive stage.

Asamoah Shines for Panevėžys

Kwadwo Asamoah delivered arguably his finest performance in Lithuanian football since joining Panevėžys four seasons ago. Deployed in an attacking role, the Ghanaian forward scored twice to inspire a 3-2 victory over FA Šiauliai.

The win ended Panevėžys’ three-match losing streak and gives them the opportunity to build momentum with two more consecutive home fixtures. Meanwhile, the representatives of the “City of the Sun” suffered their third defeat by a single-goal margin since the international break.

New Faces Make Their Debuts

With the summer transfer window now open, clubs have begun strengthening their squads. For Panevėžys, newcomer Nauris Petkevičius made an immediate impression in his first appearance. The striker is now representing the sixth TOPLYGA club of his career.

FA Šiauliai also introduced new additions. Former FK Riteriai midfielder Arvydas Novikovas played the entire second half after arriving from the capital club. The Šiauliai side has also been reinforced by Artiomas Baftalovskis, who recently departed Riteriai.

FK Kauno Žalgiris Ends Long Wait

FK Kauno Žalgiris finally returned to winning ways, ending a two-month drought without a victory. Under interim head coach Algis Jankauskas, the green-and-whites came from behind to secure a 2-1 away win against TransINVEST.

The decisive goal was scored by Renan Oliveira, the league’s top scorer in 2022. However, substitute Franco Baldassarra proved instrumental in turning the match around, contributing a goal and an assist after coming off the bench.

Young Talent Continues to Emerge

The clash between TransINVEST and FK Kauno Žalgiris also produced a red card, shown to Domantas Šluta. For the Telšiai native, it marked his second dismissal of the season, more than any other player in the league.

The match also highlighted another emerging talent. Following his departure from Riteriai, 18-year-old Artiom Šankin was named among the substitutes for TransINVEST and watched as goalkeeper Julius Virvilas returned to action after a two-month absence.

Banga Enjoys a Historic Week

Gargždai-based Banga enjoyed one of the most impressive stretches in the club’s TOPLYGA history. After defeating FK Kauno Žalgiris, they followed up with a commanding 3-0 home victory over FK Žalgiris Vilnius.

Remarkably, before last season, Banga had never beaten the country’s most decorated champions. A key figure in the club’s recent success has been Rokas Filipavičius, who scored in both victories. After missing nearly half of last season through injury, the forward has already surpassed his 2025 totals for appearances and goals.

FK Žalgiris Faces New Challenges

Following a promising run of form, FK Žalgiris suffered one of their heaviest defeats in recent years and slipped to sixth place in the standings. Their next test comes against league leaders Džiugas.

Historically, Žalgiris dominated this fixture, enjoying a 15-match winning streak against Banga between 2013 and recent seasons. However, the balance has shifted considerably, with the Vilnius side managing just five victories in their last ten meetings with the Gargždai club.

Tangiri Fires Sūduva to Victory

Marijampolė’s Sūduva brought Džiugas’ four-match unbeaten run to an end with a hard-fought 2-1 away victory.

Both goals were scored by Frankline Tangiri, who had previously been sidelined due to visa-related issues. The Cameroonian forward, one of last season’s breakout performers, made only his fifth appearance of the current campaign. The match also marked a significant milestone for goalkeeper Ignas Plūkas, who made his 200th appearance in Lithuania’s top division.

LFF Cup Quarter-Finals Await

Five TOPLYGA clubs remain in contention in the 2026 Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) Cup. Three of them will face opponents from the First League this week, while Džiugas and FA Šiauliai are set to meet in an all-TOPLYGA quarter-final.

Džiugas will travel to Šiauliai aiming to reach the cup semi-finals for the fourth consecutive year. While the club has established itself as a regular contender in the latter stages of the competition, the Žemaitija-based side is still seeking its first breakthrough beyond the semi-final hurdle.
