FK Sūduva moved firmly back into the Toplyga title race after ending league leaders Džiugas Telšiai’s impressive unbeaten run with a 2-1 away victory, inspired by a brace from Cameroonian forward Frankline Tangiri.

Both teams entered the match in strong form. Džiugas had suffered just one defeat in their previous seven league matches, while Sūduva were unbeaten in seven, recording three wins and four draws during that stretch.

The visitors also arrived knowing they had enjoyed recent success in Telšiai. Džiugas had not beaten Sūduva at home since June 2024, and the hosts’ afternoon got off to the worst possible start.

Just three minutes into the contest, Sūduva took the lead. Following a long throw into the penalty area, Tangiri somehow managed to lift the ball into the air despite being surrounded by defenders before turning and firing a quick effort towards goal. The strike appeared to catch goalkeeper Marius Paukštė slightly by surprise as it found its way into the net for 1-0.

Džiugas attempted to respond quickly and nearly equalised in the 10th minute when Argentine forward Iker Scotto powered a header narrowly wide following a corner kick.

Clear chances remained scarce for much of the first half. The next major opportunity arrived when Ibrahim Seck released Tom Lucky on a counterattack, but the Sūduva attacker dragged his effort wide when through on goal.

Apart from an ambitious acrobatic attempt from Ronald Sobowale that sailed well over the crossbar, Džiugas struggled to create meaningful danger before halftime and went into the break trailing by a goal.

The second half continued to unfold according to Sūduva’s plan. Tangiri twice threatened shortly after the restart, first forcing a save from Paukštė before sending another effort over the bar.

The warning signs proved significant. After a dangerous delivery from Faustas Steponavičius on the right flank, goalkeeper Paukšte punched the ball clear, but only as far as Tangiri. The Cameroonian reacted quickest and drove a first-time effort into the net to double Sūduva’s advantage and complete his brace.

Only after conceding the second goal did Džiugas begin to find some attacking rhythm. Their hopes were revived in the 63rd minute when the hosts won possession in midfield and the ball eventually found Denys Bunchukov. The Ukrainian took a couple of touches before unleashing a powerful long-range strike that surprised goalkeeper Ignas Plūkas and flew into the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The goal lifted both the players and the home crowd as Džiugas pushed forward in search of an equaliser. However, Sūduva’s defence stood firm and absorbed the pressure effectively.

One of the game’s decisive moments came in the 89th minute. A dangerous cross flashed through the six-yard box and substitute Pedro Bahia looked poised to convert, only for defender Henry Uzochukwu to produce a vital last-ditch intervention, sliding in ahead of the striker to divert the ball behind for a corner.

Six minutes of stoppage time gave Džiugas one final opportunity to salvage a point. Centre-back Josh Okpolokpo was pushed forward as an emergency striker to provide additional aerial presence, and he came close during added time when he met a cross with a header. However, the effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered by Plūkas.

Džiugas threw everything forward in the closing moments, but Sūduva held on to secure a valuable victory that extended their unbeaten run while ending the league leaders’ seven-match streak without defeat.

The result lifts Sūduva into third place in the standings, just two points behind Džiugas. With the top six teams separated by only six points despite the season reaching its halfway stage, the Toplyga title race remains remarkably open heading into the second half of the campaign.
