Gintaras Staniulis, who has served as President of TOPLYGA since the start of the 2024 season, has submitted a request to step down from his position.
In a farewell statement addressed to the football community, Staniulis explained the reasons behind his decision:
“The situation that has unfolded in recent days regarding Vilnius-based club Riteriai is a painful lesson for the entire football community. After carefully assessing the course of events and their consequences, I have decided to resign from my position as President of TOPLYGA.
Leadership within football structures is inseparable from responsibility. Therefore, I accept responsibility for the fact that this situation was not prevented in time and that firm but necessary decisions were not taken earlier. I am particularly disappointed for those league clubs that have suffered negative consequences in the standings as a result of these circumstances.
My views and those of the Lithuanian Football Federation on managing this crisis and setting priorities have diverged. I firmly believe that effective cooperation between the league and the federation is essential for the sustainable future of football. Recognizing that my continued presence in this role may become an obstacle to constructive dialogue, I have chosen to step aside.
I believe this decision will allow the league and the federation to identify new leadership and focus on their shared goals: transparency, stability, and the growth of football.
My resignation does not alter TOPsport’s commitments. As the league’s principal partner, TOPsport will continue its support of the national championship and Lithuanian football. All existing commitments remain in place and will be fully honored.
I would like to thank all clubs, players, and members of the football community for their trust, cooperation, and engagement. I also extend my gratitude and respect to the league’s staff for their professionalism, support, and dedication. I am confident that, having overcome this crisis, the league will emerge stronger and its teams will achieve success in European competitions.”
The resignation request must be approved by the TOPLYGA General Assembly before it becomes official.
