Narva Trans’ worrying slide down the Premium Liiga table continued on Saturday as they suffered a 1-2 home defeat against fellow strugglers Nõmme United, leaving the Narva club rooted to the bottom of the standings and seven points adrift of safety.
The match carried major significance for both sides after FC Kuressaare’s dramatic victory earlier in the day had increased the pressure on the teams occupying the league’s bottom two positions. For Trans, still searching for a permanent head coach following recent changes behind the scenes, the afternoon represented an opportunity to stop their downward spiral.
Playing in wet and windy conditions at Kalev-Fama Stadium, the hosts started brightly and showed more attacking intent than they had in recent weeks. Stanislav Agaptšev forced an early save, while Trans repeatedly pressed high and disrupted United’s attempts to build from the back.
Despite Narva enjoying more of the initiative during the opening half, clear-cut opportunities remained scarce. United gradually settled into the contest and came closest to breaking the deadlock when Kevin Mätas rattled the post with a diving header after a long throw-in caused chaos inside the Trans penalty area.
Trans responded with a promising chance of their own. Agaptšev produced an excellent through ball to release Ahmad Gero, but goalkeeper Georg Lagus came off his line quickly to deny the striker, although the assistant’s flag would likely have ruled the effort out for offside.
The breakthrough arrived just before halftime. Mätas found Zakaria Beglarišvili inside the penalty area, and the experienced Georgian needed no second invitation. Given too much space by the Trans defence, Beglarišvili delicately lifted the ball over Daniil Pareiko and into the far corner to score his 150th Premium Liiga goal and give United a 1-0 lead.
Any hopes of a Trans response were immediately damaged after the interval. Just two minutes into the second half, Mätas again proved influential, bursting down the left flank before delivering a low cross into the box. Benjamine Chisala arrived perfectly to guide the ball into the net from close range and double United’s advantage.
The goal left Trans facing an uphill battle, and with Kuressaare’s victory already confirmed, the hosts were staring at a seven-point gap to their nearest rivals. To their credit, Narva pushed forward in search of a way back into the game. Gero forced a strong save from Lagus, while pressure from a series of set pieces gradually increased around the United goal.
The breakthrough finally came in the 77th minute. Substitute Aleksandr Ivanyushin slipped a pass into the penalty area where German Šlein delivered a low cross for Gero to tap home from close range, reducing the deficit to 1-2 and setting up a tense finish.
However, despite a late surge and several dangerous deliveries into the box, Trans could not find an equaliser. United defended resolutely through the closing minutes and held on for a vital three points.
The victory lifts Nõmme United further away from the foot of the table, while Narva Trans remain in last place and have now fallen seven points behind their nearest rivals. For a club that has never been relegated from the Premium Liiga, the situation is becoming increasingly alarming.
