Liepāja were held to a goalless draw by Grobiņa in a behind-closed-doors Liepāja derby friendly on Saturday, as both sides took the opportunity to try and improve their Virslīga fortunes during the international break.
The friendly was noteworthy for two reasons. First, this was former Paide’s manager’s Vladimir Vassiljev’s first public outing since being appointed head coach. With several players away on international duty, both sides fielded far-from-full-strength line-ups, but the contest still carried a derby edge with a heavy dose of duels.
Second, the return of defender Jānis Grīnbergs, who made his first appearance since suffering a serious injury in February 2025. He started and played 30 minutes, completing what the club described as an important step after a long period of treatment and rehabilitation.
Virsliga restarts on 12th of June with Liepāja hosting Super Nova and Grobiņa travelling to Riga to face RFS the following day.
