Hungarian top-flight club Debreceni VSC have appointed Estonian coach Gert Remmel as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Remmel arrives after spending the last two seasons as assistant manager at Polish Ekstraklasa side Motor Lublin, where he worked under Mateusz Stolarski. The 50-year-old now takes charge of a Debrecen side that finished fourth in the Hungarian NB I last season and secured qualification for the upcoming UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
The appointment comes less than a month after the club announced the departure of Spanish coach Sergio Navarro. Debrecen confirmed on 17 May that Navarro and his coaching staff would leave the club upon the expiration of their contracts after the two parties were unable to reach an agreement over a new deal.
Navarro had joined Debrecen in June 2025 and guided the club to a successful campaign, leading them to fourth place in the league and securing European football for the upcoming season.
Remmel brings extensive international experience to his new role. Throughout his coaching career he has worked in Finland, Italy, Croatia, Cyprus and Poland, while also holding managerial positions with HIFK, FC Honka II, NK Novigrad and Pafos U19.
One of his most notable recent roles came with Finland’s U21 national team, where he served as assistant coach between 2023 and 2025. During that period Finland qualified for the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and earned points against both Denmark and the Netherlands during the tournament.
In announcing the appointment, the seven-time Hungarian league champions Debreceni described Remmel as an intelligent, innovative and modern coach with a strong focus on structured football, tactical organisation and player development. The club also highlighted his reputation for working with young players alongside his recent experience in the Polish top flight.
Remmel will not be arriving alone. Finnish coach Rasmus Jansson joins the Hungarian club from Motor Lublin as part of the new coaching staff. Jansson has previously worked alongside Remmel at several clubs and is regarded as one of the Finnish game’s promising young coaches. Portuguese assistant coach Ednardo Monteiro has also joined the staff after working in the youth structures of several Polish clubs, most recently Rakow Czestochowa.
