Henri Välja has represented five different clubs in the Premium Liiga, he’s only 24, and the central midfielder has been a key figure in Parnu JK Vaprus’ season so far. Playing 14 games and scoring eight goals, he is currently the league’s second top scorer.

We spoke to him about his career so far and what his journey throughout Estonian football has been like, Henri has played for five of the current ten Premium Liiga clubs. He began his career at his boyhood club FC Nõmme United who were then in the fourth tier before moving to Paide in 2018 where his potential was seen by 16-time Estonian champions FC Flora.

‘Flora paid a significant fee to Paide, the club where I began my top flight journey, who showed real belief in me. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make the breakthrough I wanted at Flora, and after two seasons I went on loan to Tartu Tammeka.’

After gaining confidence at Tammeka, Välja signed for 11-time Premium Liiga champions FCI Levadia. ‘That move felt like a major turning point, a chance to prove myself again at a top club, I started really well and earned a place in the starting eleven. But after a certain period, the Spanish head coach began to rely on other players. I didn’t want to wait for my chance again so after six months I decided to move to Parnu Vaprus.’

Henri is now into his third full season with Parnu and he has played consistently and has regained his confidence. The midfielder has been enjoying his time at the club – ‘the atmosphere at the club is incredible, I would consider our fans the best in the league, our stadium is one of the most beautiful in Estonia.’

He went on to add, ‘Parnu Vaprus is constantly pushing to climb higher up the table every season. This year we started inconsistently but we are ready to put that behind us and move forward.’

Välja has only ever played in Estonia and knows the league extremely well, at just 24 he is one of the most experienced players in the Premium Liiga.

‘The level of the league has improved year by year. Seven or eight seasons ago, when a top half team would play a bottom half team everyone more or less knew how that would end. This is no longer the case. It’s a much more competitive league now, and every match demands full focus.’

Henri spoke to us about the difficult moments he’s had in his career, with him citing his time at Flora being the toughest so far. ‘The expectations were high, both from the club and myself, but I was getting for too little playing time.’ He continued, saying, ‘it was a difficult period mentally, but looking back now that time taught me a lot, it made me mentally stronger and more aware of what I need to do to perform at my best.’

Välja has also represented Estonia in various age groups and he says these are the proudest moments of his career to date. ‘Winning the u17 Baltic Cup with a perfect record is the first thing that comes to mind.’

‘I also look back with pride on my performances for the u21s during the EUROs qualifiers. These games taught me a lot and wearing the national team shirt has always been one of the biggest honours of my career.’

‘I think the strongest parts of my game come out when I’m on the ball. I have a good shot and passing and these have always been my main qualities.’

This was proven in Parnu’s game against Nomme Kalju where Välja scored potentially the goal of the season. After spotting the Kalju keeper off his line, the midfielder unleashed an unbelievable effort from the centre circle that found it’s way into the back of the net.

However, Välja also added, ‘I’m not the quickest player, but I have tried to compensate for that with my endurance and work rate. I’m always looking for ways to develop and become a more complete player.’

Despite keeping one eye on the future, Henri Välja remains grounded in the present. While the prospect of playing abroad continues to motivate him, he is not allowing himself to become distracted. ‘My dream is to test myself abroad at some point in my career. But if that opportunity doesn’t come, I know there are other paths.’

The midfielders focus is wanting to consistently improve and work hard. ‘Right now, my focus is simple: train hard every day, keep improving, and make sure I’m ready when the opportunity arrives.’

After spending all his career so far in Estonia, Välja is hoping to move abroad but currently he is the second top scorer in the division and has been a standout so far in this seasons Premium Liiga, trusting that his hard work will open the right doors at the right time.
