Two clubs represented by Estonian internationals experienced mixed fortunes in Sweden’s top flight on Saturday. Erko Jonne Tõugjas played the full match as Halmstads BK secured their first league victory of the season with a 2-0 home win over Örgryte IS, while goalkeeper Matvei Igonen and Degerfors IF suffered a 1-2 away defeat against Kalmar FF.
Before the match, 22-year-old defender Tõugjas and Halmstad had gone eight league matches without a victory. Facing another struggling side in Örgryte, who themselves had managed just one win in their opening eight matches, Halmstad finally broke through.
The home side scored once in each half to secure a comfortable 2-0 victory and collect their first three points of the campaign. Tõugjas, who is spending his first season abroad outside Estonia, has now played every minute of all nine league matches for Halmstad this season.
Meanwhile, Igonen’s Degerfors were defeated 1-2 away at Kalmar. The home side managed to beat the Estonian goalkeeper once in each half, although Igonen still produced five saves during the match. The 28-year-old has also started all nine league matches for Degerfors this season and has kept one clean sheet so far.
Following the latest round, Degerfors sit 12th in the table with nine points from nine matches, while Halmstad remain in the relegation zone in 14th place with six points in the 16-team league.
Both Estonian internationals will return to action next week. Igonen’s Degerfors will host IF Brommapojkarna on Sunday, while Tõugjas and Halmstad face a difficult away trip a day earlier against reigning Swedish champions Malmö FF.
