St. Pauli say a decision on Estonia captain Karol Mets’ future will be taken in the coming days after the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga.

President Oke Göttlich, sporting director Andreas Bornemann and head coach Alexander Blessin faced reporters less than 48 hours after the drop was confirmed, with Mets one of the players whose contract situation was raised as the season ended.

St. Pauli’s relegation was sealed in the final round with a 3-1 home defeat by Wolfsburg, leaving them bottom of the 18-team league. Mets, who has struggled with injury, was an unused substitute for the finale.

The club finished with 26 points from 34 matches, ending three points behind 16th-placed Wolfsburg, who moved into the relegation play-off position. St. Pauli’s run-in proved costly, taking three draws and seven defeats in their final 10 league games.

Mets, 33, made 23 Bundesliga appearances this season and played three times in the German Cup, where St. Pauli were knocked out in the quarter-finals. His only league goal came in April in a 1-1 draw with Köln.

The centre-back missed around 10 matches across the campaign due to injuries at the start, middle and end of the season. His deal is now close to expiring after three and a half years in Germany.

Asked whether Mets would remain at the club, Bornemann said: “We’ll sleep on it for a few nights and then we’ll decide.” The sporting director also confirmed a similar contract situation applies to Luxembourg forward Danel Sinani.
