Lithuanian champions and Toplyga leaders FK Kauno Žalgiris continued their frustrating run of form on Saturday after being held to a goalless draw at home by lower of the table side FA Šiauliai. The result means the Kaunas side have now drawn four league matches in a row despite remaining at the top of the standings.

From the opening whistle the hosts completely controlled proceedings and immediately began creating chances. Just three minutes into the match Kauno Žalgiris capitalised on a mistake while Šiauliai attempted to play out from the back, allowing Yukiyoshi Karashima to break through in a dangerous position. However, a defender recovered in time to block the Japanese midfielder’s effort behind for a corner.

Moments later Karashima received another golden opportunity after Šiauliai goalkeeper Paulius Linkevičius made a costly error inside his own penalty area. Motiejus Burba intercepted the loose ball and quickly set up Karashima, but Linkevičius reacted sharply to redeem himself by saving the attempt.

The pressure from the defending champions continued throughout the first half. In the 22nd minute Damjan Pavlović came close from a dangerous free kick, his strike narrowly missing the top corner.

The match was then interrupted for an extended period midway through the opening half after a supporter inside the stadium required urgent medical assistance, forcing players and officials to wait for the ambulance to return before the game could continue. Which led to 18 minutes of stoppage time in the first half.

Before halftime Kauno Žalgiris again pushed aggressively for the breakthrough, but neither Leo Ribeiro nor Karashima managed to hit the target from promising situations.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Eivinas Černiauskas’ team dominating possession and territory while repeatedly failing to find a way past Linkevičius. Belgian Amine Benchaib had several dangerous opportunities but either missed the target or was denied by another strong save from the Šiauliai goalkeeper, who emerged as the clear standout performer of the evening.

Even in stoppage time the ball refused to cross the line for the champions. Leo Ribeiro came closest deep into added time when his powerful effort rattled the crossbar, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the league leaders.

Despite the dropped points, FK Kauno Žalgiris remain alone at the top of the Toplyga standings with 29 points after 14 matches. FA Šiauliai, meanwhile, stay ninth with 13 points.
