After eight rounds of TOPLYGA action, the dominance of FK Kauno Žalgiris is becoming increasingly clear. The league leaders are not only winning consistently but are also widening the gap over their closest challengers, while turbulence and inconsistency define much of the chasing pack.
Frustration in the Vilnius Derby
The Vilnius derby ended in disappointment for FK Žalgiris, who failed to convert several high-quality chances in a 0:0 draw against city rivals Riteriai.
The result extended Žalgiris’ winless stretch, with their last victory dating back to Round 4. Shortly after the match, the club announced a major change: head coach Rolandas Džiaukštas departed, with former player and experienced manager Andrius Skerla stepping in to lead the team.
Defensive Breakthrough for Riteriai
Despite sitting near the bottom of the table, Riteriai had a milestone moment: recording their first clean sheet of the 2026 season and earning their second point.
Goalkeeper Simone Moschin and centre-back Vasilije Radenovič were standout performers, earning spots in the team of the round thanks to their resilience at the back.
This result also ended a long streak: Riteriai had conceded in 13 consecutive Vilnius derbies prior to this match. Their last clean sheet in such a fixture dated back to July 2021.
FK Kauno Žalgiris in a League of Their Own
If any doubts remained about the title race, FK Kauno Žalgiris is quickly erasing them. In a statement performance, they crushed Hegelmann 5:0, marking the largest victory in head-to-head meetings between the sides.
Managed by Eivinas Černiauskas, the team boasts a staggering +20 goal difference already. They sit five points clear of second-placed Džiugas and a full ten points ahead of the rest of the competition.
League Leaders Dominating the Stats
Players from FK Kauno Žalgiris are also leading individual statistics. The top three in assists all come from the same club: Yukiyoshi Karashima, Leo Ribeiro, and Amine Benchaib.
Benchaib is also the league’s top scorer with six goals. Fabien Ourega follows with five, while Ribeiro and Xabi Auzmendi (TransINVEST) have each scored four times.
Banga Bounce Back
After a difficult stretch without goals, Banga returned to form with a 2:1 home victory over Sūduva Marijampolė, previously one of the league’s strongest defensive sides.
Both goals came from Vaidas Magdušauskas, who made a strong return to the starting lineup after nearly a month out. These were his first goals of the season.
Historically, such an outcome is rare: since 2013, Banga has only managed to score more than once against Sūduva on two occasions.
Late Drama in Panevėžys
TransINVEST came close to spoiling the debut of Toni Korkeakunnas as head coach of Panevėžys. However, a missed stoppage-time penalty by Xabi Auzmendi sealed a 1:2 defeat.
The match was heated, featuring eight yellow cards, six of them shown to Panevėžys players, who now lead the league with 23 bookings.
Korkeakunnas himself was sent off before the decisive penalty and will be replaced on the touchline by assistant Dainius Gleveckas during his suspension.
Despite the chaos, Panevėžys is finding form, winning three of their last four matches and climbing into the top five with 11 points.
Džiugas Keep the Pressure On
Džiugas continues to impress, securing their fourth win in five matches with a dramatic 1:0 victory over FA Šiauliai.
The winning goal came from Deitonas Vinckus, who recently returned after a six-week absence. Notably, both of his goals this season have come at Gargždai City Stadium, and both have been match-winners.
Coaching Changes Continue
Managerial turnover is becoming a theme this season. Three head coaches have already departed after eight rounds. Most recently, FA Šiauliai parted ways with Jurgis Pučinskis.
Former player Mantas Kuklys has stepped in as interim head coach. Having previously managed the club’s B team and served as an assistant, he now faces the challenge of turning around a side still searching for their first win.
They will close out the first round at home against Panevėžys, hoping to finally break their winless run.
