The 68 year old specialist joined Kaunas Žalgiris during the season as assistant coach to Nerijaus Maciulis, later taking over as caretaker manager. He ended up being in charge for 23 matches, winning 10, drawing 7 and losing 6 of them, earning an average of 1.61 points per match.
Mr. Širmelis is a manager with a long CV and plenty of experience, having previously worked at various levels elsewhere in Lithuania, as well as in Latvia, Finland and in Kazakhstan.
He departs the Kaunas club due to expiration of current contract, which was until end of 2024 season.
