At a press conference following official pre-match training session in Gibraltar ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Nations League play-off, Latvia head coach Paolo Nicolato said his players are highly motivated and eager to play.
Speaking to the press ahead of the first leg against the hosts, Nicolato said that the squad had approached the trip in the right frame of mind and that everyone was ready for the challenge. He stressed that the players are keen to get on the pitch and to show their level in a match that carries clear significance for both sides.
“Atmosphere is good. The players are, I think, in good condition. We prepared the match yesterday and, yes, we want to win“, said the head coach.
Both for Latvia and for Paolo Nicolato, the play offs against Gibraltar are hugely important as continued participation in league C is at stake. For Nicolato personally, his contract renewal with the Latvian Football Federation is contingent on the positive end result. Since taking charge of the Latvian National team and becoming the most expensive coach to date, Nicolato led Latvia to 3 wins, 7 draws and 10 defeats. Beyond that, his style of play has received mixed reviews from football experts and pundits alike, with some praising more confident build-up play while others criticising results and a poor scoring record.
