Two sides still searching for their first victory of the season had to settle for a share of the spoils, as FK Riteriai and FA Šiauliai played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in the opening match of Toplyga’s sixth round.
For Riteriai, who had lost all five of their opening matches, this was at least a step forward – their first point of the campaign – while Šiauliai, still reeling from a heavy 0-5 defeat against the champions, also remained without a win.
The hosts made a single change to their lineup, handing a first start to 29-year-old Trinidad and Tobago player Michael Kedman, while Šiauliai head coach Jurģis Pučinskis rotated in goal, giving 20-year-old Vilius Sivickas his debut.
Riteriai began with energy and intent, pressing aggressively and unsettling Šiauliai early on. Their bright start paid off inside the opening twenty minutes, when Jonas Usavičius finished confidently to give the home side a deserved lead. The forward was a constant presence throughout the match, combining physical hold-up play with intelligent movement in behind.
Riteriai continued to threaten, creating further chances from distance and set pieces, while Kedman also looked lively in his first start. At the other end, Šiauliai struggled to find rhythm, often giving the ball away under pressure. Their defensive line was briefly rescued by the offside flag after a well-worked move ended with a headed finish from Nwoga.
However, just as it seemed Riteriai would carry their advantage into the break, Šiauliai struck back. Serbian midfielder Lazar Vuković produced a moment of quality, curling a low free-kick into the bottom corner to score his first goal in Lithuania and level the match before half-time.
The momentum shifted after the interval. While Riteriai again started brightly, Šiauliai gradually grew into the game and enjoyed their best spell, creating a series of chances and putting the hosts under sustained pressure. During this period, only a string of solid saves from the Riteriai goalkeeper kept the score level.
Despite that, the match remained open and competitive, with both sides pushing for a winner in an end-to-end final phase. Riteriai felt they should have had a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead when Usavičius appeared to be pulled down inside the penalty area, but the referee waved away strong appeals, much to the frustration of the home bench.
In the end, neither side could find the decisive moment. Šiauliai showed improvement compared to recent performances, while Riteriai displayed encouraging signs after a difficult start to the season as they earned their first point of the season.
