With the season already underway, a familiar face returns to Vilnius as FK Žalgiris strengthen their squad with the addition of academy graduate and 26-year-old winger Matas Vareika.

The player joins on loan from FC Pyunik Yerevan until the end of the season.

Vareika is well known to the FK Žalgiris community. He first arrived in Vilnius in 2019 and, over four seasons with the senior team, made 66 appearances in the A Lyga, scoring 15 goals. During that time, he helped the club secure three Lithuanian championship titles and win the Super Cup twice.

In recent years, the winger has continued his development elsewhere. In 2024, he represented FC Hegelmann, playing a key role in the team’s runner-up finish in the Lithuanian league. At the beginning of 2025, he moved abroad to join Armenian side Pyunik.

March 2024 also marked an important milestone in Vareika’s career, as he made his debut for the Lithuania national team.
