Riga FC Women opened the new Latvian women’s football season by defending the Super Cup on Thursday, beating their main rivals RFS Women 3-0.
Title holders took control early and went ahead inside the first six minutes when Signija Šenberga found the net. Kumba Brima doubled the lead in the 19th minute to put Riga firmly in command before the break.
Brima added her second of the evening in the 64th minute to make it 3-0, and Riga saw out the remainder of the match without trouble to secure another Super Cup success.
It should be noted that Riga had also dominated this fixture last season, winning all four league meetings with RFS and beating them in the semi-finals of both the Latvian Cup and the Baltic Women’s Football League on the way to lifting those trophies. They had also won the first Latvian Women’s Super Cup last year 4-2.
Both sides had already begun their preparations for the new campaign. RFS Women came into the Super Cup after winning the Winter Cup for the second year running and had also opened their Baltic Women’s League campaign with an away loss to Flora and a win at Gintra. Riga had also faced Flora, winning 2-0 away.
The match served as the traditional curtain-raiser to the domestic campaign, with the new league season due to begin at the weekend.
Riga FC Women now start the defence of their league title with the Super Cup already secured, while attention quickly turns to the opening round of fixtures in the Latvian women’s championship.
