Džiugas Telšiai continued their strong start to the Toplyga season, securing their third win of the campaign with a 1-0 away victory over Banga Gargždai, thanks to a second-half goal from Denys Bunchukov.
Džiugas entered the match in good form after defeating Riteriai 2-0 in the previous round, while Banga were coming off a narrow defeat against TransInvest. The visitors had to cope without captain Lukas Ankudinovas, who suffered a shoulder injury in the opening minutes of the previous match. With Ankudinovas unavailable, the captain’s armband was worn by long-time goalkeeper Marius Paukštė.
The first half offered little excitement, with both teams struggling to create chances. In fact, only a single shot attempt was registered between the two sides before the break.
The game opened up slightly in the second half. Bunchukov was involved in two promising moments for the visitors, while Vilius Piliukaitis came close with a powerful long-range effort that struck the woodwork.
Džiugas eventually turned their growing pressure into a goal in the 63rd minute. After a cross into the penalty area, Denis Ževžikovas managed to flick the ball further across the box, where Denys Bunchukov collected it and finished calmly to score his second goal of the season.
Banga pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, forcing Džiugas deeper into their own half. The situation became even more difficult for the visitors when Valentino Vermeulen received his second yellow card, leaving Džiugas to defend the final minutes with ten men.
The home side created several dangerous opportunities during the late pressure. Rokas Filipavičius and Ignas Venckus both came close with threatening attempts, but goalkeeper Marius Paukštė produced a series of excellent saves to preserve the lead.
Thanks largely to Paukštė’s outstanding performance in goal, Džiugas managed to hold on and secure all three points.
With the victory, Džiugas Telšiai move up to second place in the Toplyga table with 10 points from five matches, while Banga Gargždai remain fifth with six points.
