FC Flora and Riga FC will contest this year’s Livonian Cup on Estonia’s Independence Day, 24th February, with the fixture moved indoors to the EJL Football Hall due to wintry weather conditions.
The match, originally scheduled to take place at 17:00 at Sportland Arena, will now be played at the indoor facility in Lilleküla. The game will be broadcast live on Soccernet TV.
Following the established format, Estonian champions will face Latvian champions to contest the Livonia Cup. Most of Latvia and most of Estonia comprised the historical region of Livonia – initially also known as Terra Mariana – from around the beginning of Northern Crusades in the 13th century until 1918, when both countries proclaimed independence. The Livonia Cup was introduced by the Estonian Football Association at the end of 2002, the trophy itself being a restored pre-WW2 cup of unknown origin, refurbished by goldsmith Jaak Tammiste.
Four clubs have lifted the Livonia Cup since: Flora, FK Ventspils, Skonto FC and, most recently, RFS.
