It was a difficult day in the Bundesliga for clubs represented by key Estonian internationals, as both St. Pauli and Werder Bremen suffered heavy defeats.
Estonia captain Karol Mets once again started for St. Pauli, but his side fell to a 4-0 away loss against Bayer Leverkusen. The turning point came early in the first half, when Leverkusen struck twice within two minutes to take firm control of the match. The hosts added two more goals after the break to seal a comprehensive victory.
St. Pauli had ended a six-match winless run in the previous round with a home victory over Stuttgart, but were unable to build on that result. The 32-year-old Mets made his 16th Bundesliga appearance of the season, playing the full match and receiving a yellow card late on.
With 17 points from 22 matches, St. Pauli sit second from bottom in the table. Next weekend they face Werder Bremen, another side featuring an Estonian international.
Werder Bremen, without Karl Hein in goal, lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich. Hein remained on the bench as England star Harry Kane reached a personal milestone of 500 career goals for club and country. Kane scored twice against Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, while Leon Goretzka added the third goal to complete the result.
The 23-year-old Hein has made just two Bundesliga appearances this season, the last coming on October 4. Werder Bremen are currently 16th in the standings with 19 points and are now on a 12-match winless run in the league.
