Žalgiris have added Georgian left-back Saba Mamatsashvili (23) to their squad on loan from Swedish top-flight side IK Sirius, having previously played in Georgia for FC Iberia 1999 and FC Gagra before.
Mamatsashvili spent last season in Sweden’s second tier with Kalmar FF, where he played alongside Lithuania forward Tomas Kalinauskas. Kalmar won promotion back to the Allsvenskan, with Mamatsashvili scoring three goals and providing two assists in 13 appearances.
Žalgiris sporting director Giedrius Klevinskas said the club had tracked the defender for more than a year. “I first noticed him almost a year and a half ago when I was in Georgia watching a UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualifier,” Klevinskas said. “His progress since then has confirmed the first impression that he is a high-quality footballer.
“Today we are talking about a modern, intense left-sided player who can give the team energy and quality at both ends of the pitch. Saba comes on loan and Žalgiris will have the option to buy his contract after the season.”
