Former Estonian international midfielder Bogdan Vaštšuk is set to continue his career back in Estonia after his latest overseas move ended sooner than expected.
The 30-year-old, who has represented the Estonia national football team on 15 occasions, has experienced a turbulent few weeks. In late December, Vaštšuk mutually agreed to terminate his contract with FC Koper due to family-related matters. Shortly afterwards, he signed a short-term deal with Al-Shabab, a club he had previously represented in the Kuwait Premier League.
That second spell in Kuwait, however, proved to be brief. Joining the club midway through the season, Vaštšuk featured once in the league and once in cup competition before his six-month contract was brought to an early close. The midfielder told to soccernet.ee, the decision was influenced by an injury that, while not serious, limited his availability at a time when the club – fighting to move away from the danger zone – preferred to register a different foreign player.
Vaštšuk confirmed that the split was handled amicably, with the club paying out the full salary he was due to receive over the six-month contract. He expects to be back to full fitness within the coming days and is already preparing to return to Estonia, where he remains open to continuing his playing career. While there were initial contacts with domestic clubs in December, those discussions did not progress to a concrete agreement.
Throughout his career, Vaštšuk has accumulated wide-ranging experience both at home and abroad. In Estonia, he has worn the colours of FC Levadia and FC Infonet, while his international journey has included spells in Serbia, Ireland, Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, England, Russia, Kuwait and Slovenia.
