Estonian international goalkeeper Matvei Igonen will continue his career in Sweden’s top division after signing a contract extension with Degerfors IF that runs until the end of the 2027 season.
The 29-year-old joined the Swedish club last summer from Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv, arriving with the clear objective of helping Degerfors retain their place in the Allsvenskan. Igonen quickly established himself as a crucial figure, making 15 league appearances during the second half of the season.
Degerfors’ survival push gained momentum late in the campaign. In the final seven matches with Igonen between the posts, the team recorded four wins, two draws and just one defeat – a decisive run that ultimately secured their top-flight status.
Following the strong finish to the season, Degerfors moved swiftly to extend the Estonian goalkeeper’s contract. Director of Football Patrik Werner expressed his satisfaction with the deal:
“We are very happy that Matvei has chosen to stay with us for another two years. He showed during the autumn what a high-quality goalkeeper he is and was a major reason why we managed to stay up. We wanted to keep as much of last season’s squad together as possible, and Matvei is an important piece of that puzzle.”
Igonen has earned 17 caps for the Estonian national team and has built an extensive career abroad, representing Lillestrøm, Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała, as well as Bulgarian clubs Hebar and Botev Plovdiv, in addition to Degerfors. In Estonia, he previously played for Tallinna Infonet and Tallinna Flora.
His trophy collection includes one Bulgarian Cup, three Estonian league titles, one Estonian Cup and two Estonian Super Cups.
