Lithuanian Cup winners FK Panevėžys have announced the signing of FK Kauno Žalgiris midfielder Ernestas Burdzilauskas on a loan deal becoming the first addition in this off-season.
The 22-year-old spent last season with Kauno Žalgiris in his first year at the club, making 21 appearances in the A Lyga and scoring three goals. Most of his outings came from the bench, as he was named in the starting lineup only four times throughout the campaign.
Born in Marijampolė, Burdzilauskas is a graduate of the Panevėžys football academy and now returns to familiar surroundings. In 2020, he moved back to his hometown and joined the Sūduva Marijampolė system, where he spent five seasons developing into a top-flight player. It was with Sūduva that he made his A Lyga debut at just 17 years old.
Burdzilauskas already has considerable experience at the highest level in Lithuania, having played 96 A Lyga matches and scored six goals during his professional career.
Speaking after completing the move, the midfielder expressed fond memories of his time in Panevėžys and optimism about the new chapter:
“I spent a lot of time improving in Panevėžys, so I have many good memories here. I remember them as a good team and an interesting opponent to play against,” he said.
“After a season where I played less, I think it’s good to change the environment. I hope I can help the team achieve its goals and entertain Panevėžys fans with good performances.”
Panevėžys, who previously confirmed that German head coach Roland Vrabec will remain in charge, have also secured the futures of several key players. Rokas Rasimavičius, veteran goalkeeper Vytautas Černiauskas, Kwadwo Asamoah, Justinas Januševskis and Elivelto are all set to continue with the club as they prepare for the new season.
