There was little to set the two teams apart in a fiercely fought Big Riga Derby Women’s Cup final between Riga FC Women and RFS Women, but an unfortunate own goal in the 83rd minute by Riga FC Women defender Renāte Gaugere proved enough to settle the tie.
Indeed, this one could have gone either way, with both teams creating numerous chances but, as the game evolved, it was RFS Women who emerged as the more dangerous side, forcing Riga FC Women keeper Enija Anna Vaivode to make a series of spectacular saves to keep the result level for as long as she did.
With this win, RFS Women lift their first ever Latvian Cup, although it should be noted that this is not the first time this team won this trophy. Known as SFK Riga until being acquired by RFS and merged into the Latvian men’s champions system at the beginning of this year, the club lifted Latvian Cup on 6 previous occasions.
